At FortisAlberta, service excellence is a core value. It is always our goal to serve our customers as efficiently, and as reliably as possible. And so, we are proud to announce an innovative new tool focused on improving communication and streamlining connection to Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and making Distributed Generation (DG) interconnections and improvements easier than ever.

These enhancements to our service are the result of insights gathered from customers who have been through the DER interconnection process and whose projects are now operational. With feedback through customer interviews outlining successes and challenges during the process, it became clear that our customers need and want two things as we connect their project to the grid: Communication and Collaboration.

The result – we’re proud to introduce the new DER Interconnection Guide. With the development of this guide, FortisAlberta continues our tradition of setting industry-leading standards in customer service and technical advancements in electrical distribution.

The update includes added clarity for those navigating through the six-phase DG application process, additional support by FortisAlberta upon project completion (including post-commissioning and ongoing maintenance) and revised Technical Interconnection Requirements for DER 150 kW and Greater (DER-02).

Additional updates have been made to numerous resources in our documents library where customers can find out how to get started, determine technical requirements, learn how to apply, download forms to authorize third-party consultants access to the project and more.

As experts in DER project connection to the grid, our customers look to us for solutions from the project-scoping phase through to completion, and beyond. Coordinating a collaborative approach with stakeholders - including the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) and the transmission provider is critical. Through these conversations, we have worked to create a process that incorporates customers’ needs and expectations, while ensuring our employees continue to deliver safe and reliable electricity to our valued customers.
