Planting Guide

Right tree, right place

Each year, trees and vegetation coming into contact with power lines cause more than 70,000 hours of power outages. In some cases, these contacts can spark fires.

At FortisAlberta, our extensive vegetation management program helps reduce these risks, but customers play an important role as well. By following key guidelines and keeping vegetation clear, you help keep support sale, reliable electricity to homes and businesses across the province.

  • To prevent contact with lines, all species should never be planted within a distance equal to their mature height from power lines.
  • Should vegetation grow within the standard clearance envelope, please support FortisAlberta and our contractors by ensuring approvals are granted for proper clearance through removals and/or adequate pruning. To protect public safety, we’re required to manage vegetation near energized power lines.
  • As a friendly reminder, customers are responsible for keeping their pole-to-house service lines clear.
