Our Community Investment program is guided by the principle that our success is dependent on the well-being of the 240 communities in which we operate, live and work. We strive to empower these communities by supporting local, grassroots initiatives aligned with our funding priorities—safety, education, the environment and wellness. We are proud to sponsor events and donate to organizations important to our employees and stakeholders.
Funding priorities
Safety
FortisAlberta has supported STARS since 2006, sponsoring their Mobile Education Program. This mobile training program provides specialized training to both STARS crews and rural emergency care providers. If you’ve toured the bus at a FortisAlberta event, you might have met ‘Stan,’ the human simulator used for training.
We have partnered with Agriculture (Ag) For Life, a charitable organization dedicated to building a greater understanding and appreciation of agriculture and its fundamental connection to life. An important part of this partnership is to build awareness of the importance of rural safety. With our support, Ag For Life focuses on reducing the number of rural and farm injuries and fatalities in Alberta by providing educational safety awareness programming to rural youth and their families. Their mobile Rural Safety Unit visits rural safety days, schools and Hutterite Colonies in FortisAlberta’s service area.
We support Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and on-site ambulances for more than 30 rodeos each season to keep our cowboys and cowgirls safe.
Education
Education plays a crucial role in shaping the future of our communities and industries. FortisAlberta is proud to support students across the province in achieving their academic goals. We fund scholarships through NAIT, SAIT, Lethbridge Polytechnic and the Siksika Nation High School.
We are proud to support the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) through CAREERS. RAP allows high school students to earn credits toward an apprenticeship program and a high school diploma at the same time. We continue to place the maximum allowable number of RAP students with jobs all across Alberta and have provided 144 internships since 2007.
Alberta 4-H believes in learning by doing, and we’re their partner in Work Bee Clean-ups at their Centre in Westerose and their Summer Camping Program, providing more than 700 students the opportunity to build leadership skills.
Environment
Since 2006, FortisAlberta has proudly supported the Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation, the largest raptor rescue and conservation centre in Canada. At the facility in Coaldale, injured birds are rehabilitated and released back into the wild. Additionally, guests can learn about campaigns to protect Alberta’s birds and see a demonstration of FortisAlberta’s avian safe equipment.
Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) is dedicated to the protection of public land, freshwater and ocean with a strong national and regional presence across the country. FortisAlberta supports CPAWS educational programs in rural and Indigenous communities, bringing wilderness and conservation education to students in Kindergarten to grade 12.
Wellness
Ronald McDonald House Charities provide a home away from home for families with children who are receiving vital medical treatment. For over 18 years, FortisAlberta has supported the organization with various initiatives. Highlights include funding an automated door for the ‘Magic Room,’ which houses toys and gifts, and supporting the Home for Dinner program, where FortisAlberta employees prepare home-cooked meals for patients and families. The Comfort Cart is the latest initiative sponsored by FortisAlberta, providing snacks, toiletries and activities for families spending long hours at the hospital.
As the world’s leading children’s wish-granting organization, FortisAlberta is pleased to continue its support of Make-A-Wish Canada and the Heroes Challenge initiative.
Linking Generations is an intergenerational program based out of Sherwood Park. We are proud to support the work they do in providing a safe and structured program for youth and seniors to be paired and share life experiences and wisdom.

If you have a project, program or event that you’d like us to sponsor, first read our criteria then fill out our online application providing us as much information as possible, including who benefits from your initiative, and when and where it
takes place.
Criteria for funding your initiative:
- aligns with our priorities of safety, education, environment or wellness;
- takes place within our service area;
- shows creativity and describes the impact on your community and;
- request submitted at least 30 days before your event.
We are unable to offer support to the following: individuals, religious organizations, third-party fundraisers, professional conventions, conferences or seminars (unless industry-related), travel for individuals or groups or political events.
Grant programs
Do you have a project designed to save energy or help the environment? Our annual community grants can help you plant trees, naturalize an area or create energy efficiency. Grants range in value from $500 to $7,500 and are available to municipalities within our service area.
Save Energy Grants
Save Energy Grants range in value from $1,000 to $7,500 and are available to municipalities, schools and community organizations within our service area.
Our Save Energy Grants program is designed to assist with energy efficiency projects such as window and door replacement, LED retrofits, Energy Star appliance upgrades and more. Applicants must provide the project scope of work and how additional funds will be secured should the cost be over and above the Save Energy grant. New in 2024, applications are open twice per year with submission deadlines of April 30 and September 30.
