Streamlining small microgeneration interconnection requests to enhance customer experience and operational efficiency

Jun 7, 2024, 05:59 AM

To be more responsive to the increased volume of interconnection requests, FortisAlberta recently launched a new application called PowerClerk

The growing popularity of small-scale microgeneration, such as solar panels and wind turbines means FortisAlberta must efficiently manage the increasing demand for interconnection requests. Implementing this app is crucial to meeting customer demands while ensuring operational efficiency.

“FortisAlberta is the first Canadian utility to provide PowerClerk’s online application processing of interconnection requests. By streamlining the application process through the app, we are not only improving process efficiency but making it easier to support the growth of Alberta’s renewable energy capacity,” says Jennifer MacGowan, Director, Stakeholder Engagement.

PowerClerk is not just another software tool; it's a game-changer for both customers and our Company. At its core, it’s a comprehensive platform designed to streamline the intake, review and response process for small microgeneration projects (up to 149kW). The app will simplify the submission process, ensuring application accuracy, completeness, and adherence to the Alberta Utility Commission regulation requirement for a 14-day review and response.

“PowerClerk’s online application portal and real-time project status updates will improve FortisAlberta’s relationships with solar consultants," says Rob Deschamps, Manager, Key Accounts. “Getting to the launch stage is a result of the tremendous effort by multiple teams and I would like to recognize everyone’s commitment to this project and to our customers.”

From initial submission to final approval, the application will accelerate every step of the journey, delivering a seamless experience for all stakeholders involved. Customers and solar consultants can now use the app for new interconnection requests.

PowerClerk features

  • Data verification for efficient review and timely responses
  • Easy upload of documentation: site plans, single line diagrams, electrical permits, and final inspection reports
  • DocuSign for third party authorization for secure and convenient authorization by third parties
  • Notifications to applicants to keep track of application decision and action requests

One of the most significant advantages of PowerClerk is its user-friendly interface, which empowers customers to navigate the interconnection process with ease. Gone are the days of cumbersome paperwork and lengthy approval timelines. With PowerClerk, customers can submit their interconnection applications online, anytime, anywhere, eliminating the need for physical visits or endless phone calls. This digital transformation not only enhances convenience for customers but also reduces administrative burdens for our employees, allowing them to focus on delivering superior service.

Large microgeneration projects

Interconnection requests for large microgeneration projects (150 kW up to 4.99 MW) will not be managed via PowerClerk. They will continue to be processed through email submissions to generation@fortisalberta.com
