Generation

The line that connects us all.

Connecting distributed energy resources to our grid.

Choose your connection path

Our goal is to connect your generation project safely and efficiently. Use the tabs below to choose the path that best matches how your system will operate.

< 150 kW

Small Microgeneration

For microgeneration projects under 150 kW designed to offset all or part of your home, farm or business electricity consumption. Common examples include residential solar and smaller farm or commercial rooftop systems.

  • Purpose: Size the system to offset some or all of your annual on-site electricity use.
  • Location: Install it on the consuming property, or adjacent property, that you own or lease.
  • Connection capacity: FortisAlberta confirms available capacity during its review. Capacity is not guaranteed and may change.

Apply online: Submit and track your Small Microgeneration application through PowerClerk.

Eligibility: FortisAlberta’s microgeneration processes comply with the Electric Utilities Act and the Microgeneration Regulation. The intent of microgeneration is to allow consumers to offset a portion or all of their electricity needs by generating electricity from renewable or alternative energy sources.

Important: Do not purchase or install generation equipment until FortisAlberta has reviewed and approved your project.

PCS update: Certified power control systems may support export-limited or non-export configurations. A PCS Commissioning Record and fail-safe verification are required.

Aggregated sites: If the same customer submits multiple Small Microgeneration applications, FortisAlberta reserves the right to assess them as an aggregated project. If the combined capacity is 150 kW or greater, the project may be subject to the Large Microgeneration process.

150 to 4999 kW

Large Microgeneration

For larger microgeneration projects designed to offset all or part of a farm, commercial or industrial customer’s annual electricity consumption.

  • Purpose: Size the system to offset some or all of your annual on-site electricity use.
  • Location: Install it on the consuming property, or adjacent property, that you own or lease.

Project size: The maximum is the lesser of 4,999 kW or the customer service rating.

Eligibility: FortisAlberta’s microgeneration processes comply with the Electric Utilities Act and the Microgeneration Regulation. The intent of microgeneration is to allow consumers to offset a portion or all of their electricity needs by generating electricity from renewable or alternative energy sources.

⚠️ Key Things to Know Before You Start

  • Important: FortisAlberta recommends that you do not purchase or install generation equipment until FortisAlberta has completed the Detailed Level Study. After accepting the DLS and completing any necessary studies, confirm equipment requirements with your project team.
  • Interconnection capacity is not guaranteed and can change over time as other projects connect to the grid and system conditions change.
  • All projects must undergo engineering and technical reviews to ensure safe and reliable operation.

Stage 0Form A Intake

Submit the completed Form A and the supporting project information requested by FortisAlberta. The application is reviewed for completeness before the project advances.

Stage 1Capacity Check

FortisAlberta completes an initial capacity review and identifies possible feeder or system constraints. This check does not guarantee or reserve interconnection capacity.

Stage 2Detailed Level Study

The Detailed Level Study confirms interconnection requirements, required system modifications and any additional studies. After accepting the DLS and completing the identified studies, confirm equipment requirements with your project team.

Stage 3110-Day Package

Submit the engineering information and project documents identified for the 110-day milestone. Project-specific requirements are confirmed through the DLS and by the FortisAlberta project team.

Stage 430-Day Package

Submit the project information and documents identified for the 30-day milestone. Confirm the exact package requirements and due date with your FortisAlberta project contact.

Stage 5Commissioning Package

Provide the required commissioning documents, permits, inspection records and test results. Complete any project-specific commissioning and witnessing requirements before energization.

Stage 6Energization

FortisAlberta completes its final review and required metering work. Do not energize or export electricity until FortisAlberta provides the applicable written authorization.

Distribution-connected supply

Small Scale & Community Generation

For distribution-connected projects that supply electricity to the grid from renewable or alternative sources.

  • Community Generation: Includes projects that provide locally generated electricity for the benefit of participating community members.
  • Project size: Limited by distribution system capacity, typically up to 24 MW.
Small scale generation projects require both a small scale generation application and a High Level Study application as part of the DG process.

Export-focused generation

Distributed & Commercial Generation

For commercial solar, wind, gas, storage and other projects that plan to export power onto the electrical system and do not qualify as microgeneration.

  • Exporting generation projects
  • Battery energy storage systems
  • Combined heat and power
  • Projects that may require AUC, AESO or TFO coordination

Backup power only

Standby generation

For battery backup, portable generators, GenerLinks, fixed standby generators and critical service generators that provide power during utility outages and are not intended to export.

Closed transition systems must parallel the utility system for less than 100 milliseconds. Systems that parallel for more than 100 ms require the Distributed Generation process.
