    FortisAlberta awards schools with a Safety Star grant in recognition of their commitment to providing a safe and caring learning environment for their students, teachers and staff. A panel of judges evaluated the applications and awarded 10 Safety Star grants to schools throughout FortisAlberta’s service territory. Each school is awarded $2,500 to enhance an existing safety program or fund a new safety initiative at their school.

  • History, heights and an endangered species meet on Sulphur Mountain

    “My dad built this power line up Banff’s Sulphur Mountain in 1957, so it’s ironic that I’m a small part of rebuilding it 58 years later,” says Doug Skippen, Manager Environment. “Times have certainly changed and the environmental hoops that you need to jump through to build a power line in a National Park today are considerable, but somehow Denis has managed to keep the project on track.”

  • Our donation helps students get in touch with nature

    Banff Elementary School students will participate in Nature Explorers, a monthly outdoor curriculum with field trips and projects,and we're sponsoring this program with a $2,500 donation. This program adds an outdoor, experiential component to augment in-class learning and aim to create a sense of place, understanding and caring for Banff's environment and community. Every month, each class will have one full day or two half day outdoor experiences.

  • Canmore continues to rave about wraps

    The Town of Canmore applauded our switching cubicle wrap program at the Mayor’s annual Spotlight on the Arts celebration on Sept. 24. FortisAlberta wrapped 10 cubicles this year with five new images (two of each) and 14 wraps (two each of seven images) were applied last year when the program was launched. Canmore now boasts a total of 24 cubicle wraps.

  • Our Rocky Mountain House office celebrates a safety milestone

    On Thursday, Sept. 3, employees and family members gathered at the Rocky Mountain House office to celebrate 15 years without a preventable lost-time incident (LTI) and medical-aid injury. “Some people think that getting to zero preventable injuries isn’t possible,” says Phonse Delaney, President and CEO, “but if you can do 15 years in a row like Rocky Mountain House has done, it shows that not only is it possible, but also sustainable. Congratulations and all the best!”

  • We're reminding farmers about power line safety this fall

    Fall is a busy time on Alberta’s farm. It’s time to harvest crops, move bins and many other high loads or pieces of equipment. FortisAlberta is asking farmers to remember to work safely around power lines. In 2014, 14 power line contacts involved air seeders and sprayers, a concerning trend. A farm fatality occurred earlier this year which is driving utilities to reach out to farmers, ranchers and anyone who operates agricultural equipment.

  • FortisAlberta offers grants through Alberta 4-H Community Cares contest

    Each year FortisAlberta offers four $1,000 grants to 4-H clubs in Alberta. The contest recognizes the efforts of these clubs working to enhance their communities by engaging in a community project. Congratulations to the winners of this year’s contest: Tofield 4-H Beef Club hosted a community barbeque on May 24, 2015 to welcome the Communities for Veterans Foundations (CVF) Ride across Canada. The CVF are riding their horses across Canada to raise awareness of mental and physical challenges faced by our serving and veteran military when returning home.

  • Sponsorship helps Devon’s Royal Canadian Legion purchase life-saving device

    We recently presented the Royal Canadian Legion in Devon with a $2,000 cheque to fund the purchase of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). An AED is an electronic device that can monitor heart rhythms and tell if the heart has stopped beating.

  • Employees volunteer at barbeque for Lacombe residents

    On Friday, July 24, employees from our Lacombe office hosted a barbeque for area residents during Lacombe Days. Lacombe Days showcases the fun and vibrant community of Lacombe. With more than 40 events and activities, there’s something for people of all ages, including a parade, street festival, car show, music in the park, markets and great food! Residents also had the opportunity to enjoy the fireworks.

  • We’re doing our part to keep Sage-grouse alive

    As a Company, we continually seek to improve our environmental performance and manage environmental risk. We recognize that construction, operation and maintenance of distribution power lines and rights-of-way may adversely affect the environment. This is why we partnered with Environment Canada and Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD) to relocate 118 poles and 15.4 kilometres of power lines to protect a critical Greater Sage-grouse habitat southeast of the hamlet of Manyberries.

  • We launched a mobile app to allow our customers to report and view real-time outage information

    We’re excited to share the release of the FortisAlberta mobile app, along with improvements made to our outage map. Through the App, our customers are able to report outages, view current and planned outages and get the details they need right away. “Enhancing our customers’ experience through technology is a significant priority,” says Rob Tisdale, Vice President, Customer and Information Services. “To achieve this, we continue to leverage and implement new technology to provide our customers with greater access to information about FortisAlberta and their electricity service.”

  • Creating warm hearts through Soup Sisters

    What do you get when you combine a group of FortisAlberta’s women leaders in a SAIT kitchen with some amazing chefs? More than 100 litres of soup of course! As part of the Company’s Women in Leadership group, more than 30 FortisAlberta leaders recently donated their kitchen-savvy slicing and dicing skills to help cook soup as part of a non-for profit organization called Soup Sisters.

    National Aboriginal Day (NAD) takes place on June 21, 2015. It is a special day to celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada. At FortisAlberta, we value our relationships with the aboriginal communities we serve and we’re diligent about involving community members while working directly on their lands and within their traditional territory. There are 20 individual First Nations and two Métis Settlements in our service territory. These relationships are maintained by one of our Stakeholder Relations Managers who has more than thirty years’ experience in aboriginal relations.

  • It's lightning season, be safe!

    Lightning season has begun, and will run its course until September. In 2014, we recorded more than 210,000 strikes for 55 of our major service points. As, your electric distribution provider, we have more than 120,000 kilometres of mostly overhead power lines that can be affected by lightning strikes and create power outages.

  • The Ospreys have returned to FortisAlberta's nesting platform!

    The Ospreys have returned to our nesting platform in the Canmore area, and are now busy keeping their three eggs warm. Through a live video stream, you can get a bird’s eye view with sounds as the hatchlings emerge from their eggs over the upcoming weeks.

  • Earth Hour Challenge Results!

    During Earth Hour, Canadians were called on to join other countries in sending a strong global message – that this is the year we change climate change. Earth Hour is held every year in late March, around the time of the Spring and Autumn equinoxes in the northern and southern hemispheres. This is when sunset times are almost the same in both hemispheres. Organizers say this ensures the greatest visual impact for a global 'lights out' event. The ninth annual Earth Hour took place at 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, March 28, 2015. On this day, six continents, 120 countries, and 24 time zones were united as a global community, making their voices heard through the individual action of turning off the lights. Earth Hour shows how great things can be achieved when people come together for a common cause.
